Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

The lawyer's envelope held two keys for the new house. The previous owners mention a cleaner, a dog walker and a brother who checked on the place, and the builder's paperwork shows six were cut originally.

Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey

In plain words

The first useful move after losing a key is to think about where it worked rather than where it went. A house key commonly opens more than the front door: the back door, a side entrance, the door from the garage into the house, a shed, a gate padlock, sometimes a storage room or a mailbox. A same-visit rekey starts by listing those openings, then treats the ones that are yours to change and points you to the right person for the ones that belong to a landlord, a condominium or the postal service. Every cylinder on the list leaves the visit taking a new key.

Sound familiar?

A roommate moved out on bad terms and says the key was left on the counter. It was not. You have already changed the Wi-Fi password, but the front door still opens for a key that could be anywhere.

How the visit goes

Cambridge

How the visit goes

  1. Reading each cylinder before it comes off the door

Every cylinder on the list gets a close look while it is still in the door. The keyway shape and the maker's stamp tell the locksmith which pin kit fits and whether the keys can be cut on the van. The feel of the plug with a working key, if one exists, says whether the pins and springs are healthy or tired. Corrosion on the face, a wobbly plug or a key that needs a jiggle points to a cylinder that will benefit from cleaning or replacing while it is out. A homeowner-rekeyable cylinder, recognisable by its small reset slot beside the keyway, calls for a different tool and gets noted.

  2. Handling a restricted or high-security keyway

Restricted and patented keyways rekey in much the same way, with more parts and a little more care. A high-security cylinder's own elements, a sidebar's finger pins, a rotating element or another system-specific part, are reset to the new key's profile alongside the ordinary pins, and the finished plug is checked before refitting. Key blanks for these systems are issued through whatever authorised channel that system uses, a letter, a registered account, a dealer agreement, or sometimes a key card; bring whatever credential you were given. The reward is that copies of the new key can only be made through that same channel, one of the stronger kinds of key control a household can have.

  3. One key on the ring

If the house was keyed alike during the visit, the ring that goes back in your pocket is lighter. One key opens the front door, the back door, the garage entry and the gate. Each family member carries one thing instead of a jangle, and the question of which key goes to the dog walker has one answer. New doors added later, a shed or a workshop, can be pinned to the same code when they are installed. Guests and sitters find the arrangement easier too, and a single key is a good deal harder to lose than a bunch.

What affects the quote

Same fees day, night or weekend

  1. 1Getting to each cylinder

Doors spread across a large lot, a suite up several flights behind a locked lobby, or a gated property with a padlock at the road add walking and waiting time that the quote allows for.

  2. 2Condition of the cylinders

A clean, healthy cylinder is repinned as is. One clogged with salt and grit is cleaned first, and a worn or damaged one is replaced rather than repinned, each priced as its own item.

  3. 3Restricted or high-security keyways

Patented and high-security cylinders carry more parts, need dedicated pin kits and issue keys through authorised channels. Rekeying them takes longer and the blanks cost more than common residential ones.

Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey: questions

The car key was on the same ring. Can you deal with that too?

Vehicle keys are a separate branch of locksmith work because most carry a chip the car's immobiliser recognises. Retiring a lost car key means programming the car to forget it and to accept a new one, which an automotive locksmith does at the vehicle. Mention the car when you book; where the company offers that service it can be scheduled, and otherwise the household rekey proceeds and you are pointed to the right help.

How long does a whole-house rekey take?

Plan on an hour or two for a typical house with three or four cylinders, including the walk-through, identification, pinning, cutting and testing. Each additional cylinder adds a little, as does swapping a cylinder to bring a mismatched door onto the same key, resetting a homeowner-rekeyable lock or clearing a garage opener. The locksmith gives a realistic window on the phone once the list of doors is known.

The ring was stolen with my wallet and licence. What changes?

The priority. A stolen wallet gives the holder your address, and the ring gives them the key to it, so the rekey moves to the front of the queue and the locksmith says so when you call. The work itself is the same: every cylinder the key fitted is repinned and new keys are cut. It helps to list the doors on the phone so the right pin kits and blanks are on the van when it arrives.
