The lawyer's envelope held two keys for the new house. The previous owners mention a cleaner, a dog walker and a brother who checked on the place, and the builder's paperwork shows six were cut originally.
Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey
In plain words
If you rent, losing a key is handled in three steps rather than one. Tell your landlord first, since a lock change on a rented unit goes smoother when both sides know about it and both end up with a working key. Then the locksmith rekeys the suite door, and any other cylinder that key fitted, with both parties knowing. Finally new keys are cut for you and for the landlord's set, so the arrangement that existed before the loss is restored on a fresh combination. Landlords generally welcome the call; their hardware stays in place and their own key set is refreshed too.

How the visit goes
Rekey or replace, cylinder by cylinder
Rekeying suits hardware in sound condition, and most cylinders on a house qualify. The locksmith flags the exceptions while the list is being made: a plug worn oval by decades of use, a cylinder packed with salt and grit from a side door that faces the driveway, a knob lock so light it offers little resistance, or a keyway that no longer has blanks available. For those, a replacement cylinder or a complete new deadbolt keyed to match the rest is proposed as its own item, so you decide door by door. The aim is that every cylinder leaving the visit on a new key is one that will keep turning well for years.
Resetting a homeowner-rekeyable cylinder without its key
Some newer residential locks carry a small slot beside the keyway that lets a homeowner change the key with a learn tool, but only while a working key is in hand. When that key is the one that was lost, the locksmith uses the manufacturer's reset tool instead: the cylinder is pulled from the lock, seated in the reset fixture, and its internal sidebar and wafers are returned to a blank state. A new key of the right blank is then inserted, the learn tool sets the cylinder to it, and the lock goes back on the door taking the new key and rejecting the old one.
Spares that live outside the house
A rekey is the natural moment to decide where the spare goes, because the one under the planter is the reason many of these calls happen. A key with a trusted neighbour or nearby relative is the simplest answer. A small combination lockbox fixed in a discreet spot, with the code shared only with the people on your list, is a step up and can be fitted before the locksmith leaves. For families with a keypad lock, a personal code for each member does the same job without a key at all. Whichever you pick, the spare is now a planned thing with a known home rather than a habit.

What affects the quote
Same fees day, night or weekend
1How many cylinders are on the list
A front door with a deadbolt and a handle is two cylinders. Add the back door, the garage entry, a side door and a shed and the count climbs, and the quote follows the number of cylinders repinned.
2Homeowner-rekeyable cylinders without a working key
Resetting a homeowner-rekeyable cylinder when its key is gone uses that system's own reset fixture, where the installed lock supports one, and a few extra minutes per cylinder, which shows as a small line on the quote.
3Entry as well as rekeying
If the lost key was your only key and you are locked out too, the door is opened first and that opening is quoted as its own step ahead of the rekey.
Lost Keys — Same-Visit Rekey: questions
The car key was on the same ring. Can you deal with that too?
Vehicle keys are a separate branch of locksmith work because most carry a chip the car's immobiliser recognises. Retiring a lost car key means programming the car to forget it and to accept a new one, which an automotive locksmith does at the vehicle. Mention the car when you book; where the company offers that service it can be scheduled, and otherwise the household rekey proceeds and you are pointed to the right help.
How long does a whole-house rekey take?
Plan on an hour or two for a typical house with three or four cylinders, including the walk-through, identification, pinning, cutting and testing. Each additional cylinder adds a little, as does swapping a cylinder to bring a mismatched door onto the same key, resetting a homeowner-rekeyable lock or clearing a garage opener. The locksmith gives a realistic window on the phone once the list of doors is known.
The ring was stolen with my wallet and licence. What changes?
The priority. A stolen wallet gives the holder your address, and the ring gives them the key to it, so the rekey moves to the front of the queue and the locksmith says so when you call. The work itself is the same: every cylinder the key fitted is repinned and new keys are cut. It helps to list the doors on the phone so the right pin kits and blanks are on the van when it arrives.
