What we tell our neighbours
Reading about locks is not most people's idea of a good evening, so we have kept these pieces short. Each one answers a single question clearly, from how to keep a lock working through a cold snap to what to think about before adding a keypad at the office.

Lockout Services
What if the door is stuck rather than the lock?
This is more common than people expect, especially in older houses and at the change of seasons. A door that has swollen, sagged on its hinges or been pushed out of square by thick weatherstripping can pin the bolt against the strike so it will not draw back even with the right key. The locksmith relieves the pressure to free the bolt, then adjusts the strike, hinges or seal so the door closes and locks without a shoulder. Home Lockout Service
Last night the door would not lock either. Is that the same problem?
Sometimes, though a deadlatch that will not catch at closing and a bolt that refuses to withdraw at opening are different mechanisms, not automatically the same fault. A door dropped on its pivots or a cam slipped behind the cylinder can affect either one; a closer stopping short of the strike explains a latch that will not catch but not a bolt that will not retract. The locksmith checks each symptom on its own during the visit and tests the door closing under its own weight before leaving. Business Lockout Service
What should I do while I wait for the locksmith?
Put both halves of the key somewhere safe, note whether the door or vehicle is locked, and leave the keyway alone. If it is bitter cold, keep the storm door closed so the lock is not taking freezing rain. Have identification ready, or vehicle papers for a car. If the door is open, stay near it. That is all; the extraction goes smoother for a lock nobody has poked at. Broken Key Extraction
Someone reached through the sidelight to turn the thumb-turn. Should I fit a deadbolt keyed on both sides?
It is tempting, but a thumb-turn lets everyone in the household leave by that door without hunting for a key, special device or special knowledge, so a keyed inside cylinder is the wrong fix. Better answers are a tested security-film system or laminated glass in the sidelight to slow an arm from passing, moving the deadbolt beyond arm's reach of the glass where the door allows, and a glass-break sensor if you have an alarm. Change or Rekey Locks
Can a smart lock or keypad deadbolt be rekeyed?
The mechanical part of it can. Many keypad or app-controlled deadbolts hide a small keyed cylinder under a cap for the day the batteries fail, and that cylinder can be pinned to your house key so the backup key on your ring is the same one that opens the other doors; some models are key-free and rely on an external battery backup instead. Codes are a separate matter: the locksmith will suggest deleting any code belonging to someone who no longer needs access at the same time. Lock Rekeying
What is the difference between a deadbolt and the lock in my door knob?
The knob or lever holds the door shut with a spring latch: a bevelled tongue that snaps into the frame and can be pushed back by anything slid into the gap. A deadbolt is a solid rectangular bar driven by the key or thumb-turn alone, and when fully thrown it locks in place so it cannot be pressed back from the edge. The knob keeps the door closed; the deadbolt keeps it locked. Deadbolt Installation
Can I replace only the deadbolt and keep my existing knob?
Yes. The deadbolt and the knob or lever are separate locks in separate bores, so one can be replaced while the other stays. The new deadbolt can be pinned to work on the same key as the knob if the keyways are compatible, and its finish can be matched to the knob so the door looks intended. Replacing the deadbolt first is a sensible order, since it does most of the securing. Lock Replacement & Upgrade
Will the door look any different afterwards?
Usually not, when the original case is repaired: the same knobs, escutcheons, faceplate and strike go back on in the same positions, and the only visible change is paint or grime cleared from the edges that were catching. A replacement case is chosen to match the pocket so original trim is reused wherever spacing allows, though an occasional case needs a small pocket or fixing change, explained beforehand. My electronic safe lock has a dead battery. Do you still need to drill it?
Usually not. It depends on the model. Some electronic locks offer an external contact for a fresh battery, or a mechanical override key behind a cover plate; restoring power this way wakes a dead keypad but does not bypass a lost code on its own. Others have a reset port on the lock body, which sits inside the safe and still needs the door opened by other means first. The locksmith works through that model's own documented procedure before considering anything more invasive. Safe Opening & Combination Change
Do you deliver and move the safe, or do I need to arrange that?
Delivery and the final move into position are part of the service, using equipment suited to the safe's actual weight rather than improvising with furniture dollies or straps meant for lighter loads. The route in is measured ahead of time so doorways, stairs, and tight turns are accounted for before the unit arrives, which avoids a surprise at the one hallway that turns out to be too narrow. Safe Installation & Servicing
What information helps before the visit?
A photo of each door's lock from inside and outside, the type of door, whether there is glass nearby and roughly how many keys are in circulation. For a business, a sketch of the doors and who needs to reach each area saves a great deal of time. Mention any door that sticks, has been forced or has a closer or push bar on it. With that, the locksmith arrives with the right formats and a plan to discuss. High Security Locks

Commercial Locks
What is the difference between rekeying a business and replacing its locks?
Rekeying keeps every lock on the door and changes only the pins inside the cylinder, so a new key works and the old ones stop. Replacing swaps the hardware itself. Commercial cylinders are made to be repinned many times, so rekeying suits any lock in sound condition and leaves the levers, trim and door untouched. Replacement is chosen door by door for cylinders that are worn, corroded or too light for what they protect. Commercial Rekeying
How long does designing and installing a master key system take?
It depends on the number of doors and levels involved. A small business with a handful of doors and one or two levels moves through assessment, pinning and testing in less time on site than a multi-floor property with several departments and a top-level master, where more doors, more testing and more keys to cut all add to the work involved. Master Key System Design
What maintenance does the system need going forward?
Ongoing maintenance is light: checking the battery backup and the request-to-exit device periodically, keeping reader surfaces reasonably clean, and revoking credentials promptly once someone leaves. Door and frame alignment is worth a look at each change of season, since a shifted door can affect how cleanly an electric strike or a magnetic lock releases. Access Control Installation
Can a padlock or extra deadbolt stay on a door that has this hardware?
No additional fastening should stay on an exit door that does not release the same way the primary device does. A hasp, padlock or separate deadbolt added at some point for extra security is a common finding on an older door, and removing or replacing it with something that releases under the same push is part of bringing that opening back to a single, reliable exit. Car Keys
The key broke off in the door lock. Is that still a lockout call?
Yes, with one extra step. The broken piece is drawn out with extraction tools that grip it and pull straight, never pushed deeper, and then the door is opened normally. The cylinder is checked for worn wafers or salt and cleaned or lubricated, and the key itself is inspected too, since bending, wear or fatigue can snap a key even in a healthy cylinder. A new blade is cut from the two halves or from the code, because a worn copy would break again. Car Lockout Service
Can a key be made for an older car with no chip?
Yes, for a vehicle that genuinely has no immobilizer, checked by VIN and equipment rather than assumed from age, since several early-2000s vehicles already shipped with a factory immobilizer and coded key. Where that is the case, it is the simplest key work there is: a blade cut to the factory code from the VIN or to a reading of the door lock, rather than copied from a worn original. If the ignition has become sloppy, the locksmith can rebuild it in the same visit. Car Key Replacement
What happens if I only have one key and it is for a car I just bought?
This is a common and straightforward call. The locksmith works from the single existing key and the vehicle itself, identifying the blade profile and reading or matching the chip, then testing the result on its own before the visit ends. It is also a good moment to confirm how many keys the car's history suggests should exist, since a private sale sometimes changes hands with an unknown key already out of circulation. Spare Car Key Duplication
What should I have ready before a key fob programming visit?
The vehicle's identification number, proof that you own or are authorized to use it, and an honest count of how many fobs exist for the car, working or not. Mention whether any fob is truly lost rather than misplaced at home, and whether the vehicle currently starts with the fob you do have. That picture lets the right procedure and parts be settled before work begins rather than partway through it. Key Fob Programming
